=====! interview !=============================================================

        Session Start: Mon Oct 18 22:15:15 1999

        *** zden has joined #demojournal

<|ps|> hello! :) so who are you? :)

<zden> oh, well, i am digital alchymist =)

<|ps|> digital alchimist hei? have you managed to turn sand into
               gold yet?

<zden> hard to say exactly what i want to do with that, i think i
would like to find happyness and make others happy too
usually i am failing, by from time to time i am successfull,
so i am keep on tring..

<|ps|> i see, so how old are you, where are you from and what do you
               do on real life? :)

<zden> i am 24, from the capital city of slovakia, bratislava
i am already not studing, i am graduated computer science
               engineer
now i am tring to establish my own company with my friend
producing quality video clips and animations (webs etc.)
i am already too bored from programming and all that
engineering stuff, so i am more into graphics

        <|ps|> any luck so far?

<zden> well, our company is 1 month old, so hard to speak about some
               luck now :)

<|ps|> :) and what do you do on this thing we call scene?

<zden> well, i was for a long time 'free-lance coder', designing my
demos, doing some small gfx, and waiting for other to give me
               some special track
get music track for demos = always hardest thing for me :)

        <|ps|> go on..

<zden> ok... well, maybe i can say why i was freelance for a long
time and not a member of some group...

<|ps|> why were you freelance and not a member of some group? :)

<zden> hard to say, maybe i had a need of quite 'personal message'
and it was very difficul to make some compromises but now
more and more i feel, it's important to coop with more people
:) it's very hard to keep the track with the rest of the
scene, if you are just lonely, you can't be perfect in all
fields (code, gfx, 3d, design) now i am more looking for a
true friends to cooperate on some projects, and now i am not
               talking about demos anymore

<|ps|> ok, but lets talk demos, tao seemed to be your big break! 4th
               at tp8 wasnt it? :)

<zden> it was 5th, yes and my friends was laughing at me
again 5th, 4th, etc. :) never something "higher" on major
               demo parties
it was a break, i was working on tao for over one year
i was not working hard, but quite constantly, i had
difficulties to have a music track for that demo
unreal recommended me scorpik, then he got busy and told me
               about loonie

<|ps|> let start from scratch, when did you first got a computer?

<zden> my first computer was a zx spectrum, i was 12 year old, on
the high school i got XT computer and then ... you know all

<|ps|> when were you first interested in coding?

<zden> well, of course on zx, my dad learned me some starts in
basic, then i tried a little bit zx80 assembler
on PC i learned, pascal, then asm and finally c

<|ps|> and when did you became really into graphical coding?

<zden> when i saw for the first time 'unreal' demo by FC
i though to myself 'i whould be never able to make things
like that' but later i realised, i can do that :)

<|ps|> and look at you go nowdays :P you say you are from slovekia,
               how is the scene there?

<zden> well, scene here is much worse like 2 years ago

        <|ps|> how come?

<zden> in that time, mist was active, i was active, sceners were
gathering but now it seems, not so much ppl in slovakia is
               coding something great...

        <|ps|> no parties anymore?

<zden> well, it's very HARD to make a party in slovakia
we organized a demobit98 party last year, about 300 sceners
came from slovakia & czech republic
and because everything was so expensive, also an entrace
fee was high, so maybe that's why not so much ppl came

<|ps|> 300 sceners is not bad at all..

<zden> well, you know how is that, get 10% of 300 and you got a real
number of sceners most of ppl were gaming, as usually but
this time, 'peon' did a great demo for fiasko, well,
technically great from my point of view
so it seems, there is not everything lost :)
we are still much better in scene stuff like for example
czech republic, but in comparisom to poland or hungary we are
               scene-nothing :)

<|ps|> ok, you also got a 5th on fiasko didnt you?

<zden> oh yes, i made a demo in 4 days and i was not expecting a
great placing :) i was on a long trip around EU in the summer
but i could not stand to visit our local party without any
               production :)

        <|ps|> where did you go?

<zden> i was travelling with my GF Lucia to Croatia
and then we went to Sweden (very very positive country for me)
and to Amsterdam we were 3.5 weeks no journey, and i was very
horny for coding when i got back :-) so i did 'singularity'

<|ps|> what is so great about sweden?

        <zden> nature

        <|ps|> nature?

<zden> we were camping near that big lake (forgot the name) near
Amal town, it was very nice & those woods were quite mystical
mushrooms, trees, rocks, water - just nature :)

<|ps|> nice :) ok, time for top quiz show contest! you ready?

        <zden> i hope so...

<|ps|> 1. whats your favorite color?

        <zden> this time: orange

        <|ps|> 2. name 5 animals started with letter p

<zden> pes, papagaj, panda, pomaranc, paprika ;)

<|ps|> 3. what are the best movie/book you ever seen/read?

        <zden> lost highway / none
but from recent reading material, articles by Terrence McKenna
               were very interesting for me

<|ps|> 4. what was the most bizarre thing that you ever witnessed?

<zden> the end of physical reality :)

<|ps|> 5. what was the most interesting cliche you ever read?

<zden> lord of the rings :-)

<|ps|> do you have a pet?

<zden> no and the cactus i got from a friend died
               sorry, dried ;)

<|ps|> did your cactus had a name?

<zden> surely not, even i had a problem to find a name for my
               computer :-)

<|ps|> ok, lets talk parties, what parties did you went to and which
ones do you have best memory of?

<zden> i was usally sending productions via another person to the
party, i was on wired96 and scenest97, then our local parties,
wired was best, because a large slovak scene group was there

<|ps|> wired96 wasnt that the one with paper intro?

<zden> yes yes! and with slovak demos xaos and (e), those were ready
for demobit96, but it was canceled, so we visited wired
wired was a big start for statix =)

<|ps|> what is your favorite coder?

        <zden> slyde

<|ps|> what about graphicians and musicians?

<zden> no favorite gfx artist and now i like raiden's tunes best

<|ps|> ok, lets try harder questions, what are your favorite demos?:)

        <zden> saint, paimen, stv, megablast...

<|ps|> i see we have a suomiscene fan here :)

        <zden> :)

<|ps|> what is it about finland demos that makes them that extra
               special?

<zden> i am not sure there are somehow special, i just like those
and many many more, usually i like 2d bitmap demos with
experimental electronic music, design and good musical
               synchronization

<|ps|> what do you think about big 3d world walkthroughs?

<zden> majority of ppl like them, as majority of ppl now likes
3d games, so also majority of ppl tring to make 3d demos...

<|ps|> but what do you think about them?

        <zden> i can't do them, i never will and i don't watch them
they are nice, but they are boring for me
demos for me are not about pushing possibility limits
i whould prefer nice small designed cute demo instead of big
               perfect 3d

<|ps|> :) tell us about your art visions

<zden> oh well, usually it's about abstract
it's quite hard for me to express my inner feelings by words
(as you can judge in this interview)
it's much more suitable for me, to make a photo, picture of
effect so my way to express is in pictures or moving pictures

<|ps|> do you have any galleries?

<zden> ppl can see my pictures and photo collection at
               http://message.sk/zden
we are running here a small cyber-art server at
               http://message.sk
               there are also my creations
so about vision, more and more i can see my inner story
behind demos, there not just a pure effect slide show, but
it's on everyone to find something for him from my prods.

<|ps|> you go deep man. so any wise words for your fans out there?

<zden> "let's start to cooperate on something great" :)

<|ps|> nice.. thank you alot for your time zdenko :)
               this ends our transmission :)

        <zden> yes i am tired

=====! demo !==================================================================

        Powertrip by Kamelite (party-version)
        Found at www.scene.org
        1st place at Distance'99

        System requirements:
        3.5 MB HD, Vesa2.0, Midas-friendly soundcard
Does not work in a dos-box, use real DOS!

        The demo:
Powertrip is a nice standard demo: no stories, no design, just a
good mix of 2D and 3D effects. It has some original ideas, but also
quite some small errors. My favorite parts are the Kamelite-title
(you know the effect where spotlights move behind a title, showing
only the rays? Imagine that with the rays on fire), and the
ball/torus surrounded by cubes that are textured with rotozoomers,
and subliminal messages on top of that. It looks quite psychedelic,
actually :). Some other effects are: the 3D-rings following the
movements of the innermost ring, the "rubber" 3D-diamond-objects,
and the zoom-in-while-blurring effect (ugly name, but I couldn't
find the real one in the dictionary :)). Not new, but long time no
see, so it's OK. I'm less happy about the colors. Most scenes use
very few of them, or only shades of one hue, and this gives the demo
a 256-color look. Other parts are too dark, like the globe that opens
to reveal some text, and a fire-palette from pure
        black->red->yellow->white is sooooo overdone...
There's one pixeled image (hi-res hi-color), showing two faces and
a claw-finger, that's certainly good enough to justify the
mode-switches used to show it. But it makes the low-res 3D-letters
that move over it very slow :( The music starts slow & epic, then
moves to techno demo-music. It's a bit repetitive, but I like most
of it. The speed of the tune fits with the speed of the demo, but
syncing is almost non-existent. Parts hardly follow musical changes,
probably because there are few changes in the tune, but some
objects/effects could have followed the beat...

        Worth the download ?
I liked Powertrip: the music is cool, the overall feel is good,
there are just some highly visible bugs, like the blur-routine
flipping some pixels, or some background-textures with big ugly
pixels, and some smaller things... Maybe I look too much at the
details. Feel free to check it out.
                                                                        Seven

Kritix has won multichannel competition with his song "Votecheat".
It's style something between usual tdr production and Simon V and
Kritix proves by it that he can do music in various styles. Even
with this similarity it is still original enough and I think Kritix
can become one of the top scene musicians one day.
"Tihany express" by Velvet & manka placed 2nd with a guitar tune
with soft trumpets. It's a fine music that can be done by only few
	people in the scene.
4chnl compo won Velvet & A-move with song "Downtown" and this	one
was actually reason why I've started downloading music from dialogos.
They play again a guitar tune with great bassline, perfect percussion
and melody that makes you easy.
I'm sorry that I didn't have time to get more music from dialogos
but this 3 songs should be enough, because they are all worth
	downloading.
                                                                       tryhuk

=====! question !==============================================================

        > question of the week: what is THE scene country?

        scenecountry is denmark.
        fudge blasphemy purple.
        -distance.fi

The one and the only, Finland.
        -bca.fi

        must be trinidad for sure.
        -tmk.no.jp

        finland, of course.
        -frodo.fi

        finland
        -knos.fr

        nowadays maybe germany..
        -dfj.hu

after all it must be france.
        -melwyn.fi

        Madagascar
        -adok.at

        Not Portugal for sure.
        -attack.pt

Finland, I suppose. Although Portugal is becoming a threat...
and even Belgium (cough, cough) :)
        -seven.be

I guess 'Belgium' isn't the right answer ;-)
        Well let me think.
a couple years ago I would have said Finland, but at this moment
I don't think there is no such thing as 'THE scene-country'
But I gonna make a try: GERMANY (It's quite central and there are a
lot of parties lately and parties is where all the fun is, isn't it?
        -djefke.be

Last year we introduced the Cologne Conference to the scene and it was a
great success. It was one of the non-computer party events to be held
yearly during the traditional computer fair known as the WOC (World Of
Commodore) in Cologne, Germany.

This year, its name is Home Electronics World, and we are awaiting Sceners
from all over the world. For us, this saturday evening is an occasion to
drink some beer, meet scenish friends and it is a place to feel comfortable
after a long days effort at the fair. Once again, you'll have a good
reason to come to Cologne this year: Meet your scenish friends, party with
us, and again, feel good at the Cologne Conference in 1999...

Expect the following features:

----[ bigger and longer, 16 hours of pure fun

----[ big lottery with great valuable prices

----[ happy "Golden Beer" winners

----[ helpful organizing staff including local information

----[ low prices for entry, meals, and drinks

----[ extraordinary scenish fun competitions

----[ including Gravenreuth dart (knife) competition :)

---+--------------+----------------------------------------------------+---

Cologne Conference 99 will be held from November 13th to 14th, 1999. As
usually this party runs parallel to the tradional WOC fair called "Home
Electronics World", the official world's biggest Amiga fair.

The Party is very close to the fair - only 2km from the
"Home Electronics World" main entry.

Address: Rheinlnder
         Auenweg 173
         Kln (Mlheim)
         Germany

Party service lines - 24h from dusk till down: 0179 / 493 291 3
                                                0179 / 693 777 1

Admittance is at 18:00 cet, Saturday, 13th November 1999
--------------------------------------------------------

---+------------------+------------------------------------------------+---
---[ How to get there ]------------------------------------------------[ o3
---+------------------+------------------------------------------------+---

How to get from the fair to the party
-------------------------------------

on foot:
~~~~~~~~
The  party  place is only 15 minutes away from the fair if you walk.  After
going  out of the party-place you should look for some party signs.  If you
don't see anything, ask for the Auenweg.  Once you are on this street, walk
on  the  left  site for about 2km.  The "Rheinlander" is on your left - you
can't miss it.
by car:
~~~~~~~
We recommend you not to drive there, if you can walk. It takes longer to
get there by car, because of the high fair traffic (remember: there is
also the ART COLOGNE at the same time). But if you want to take your car
with you, drive along the street in front of the main entrance of the fair.
After the bridge (100 meters after the main entry) take a right. You will
be on Auenweg. Go straight down for about 2km and you'll see the
"Rheinlander" on your left. Park your car on your right at the big parking
place with no costs - hardly not to see.

---[ Entrance Fee ]----------------------------------------------------[ o4
---+--------------+----------------------------------------------------+---

We figured out the entrance fee and maked it again as low as possible for
you. With this price we can only cover the costs for the organizing and
rent of the place. Comparing to other traditional fair-parties, the entry
fee is still the lowest ever.

Entrance fee is 15,00 DM

			Mo3 - format of tomorrow ?

	downloads:
	http://www.icl.ndirect.co.uk/music/ - Bass sound system
	http://www.iis.fhg.de/amm/download/mp3enc/index.html - mp3enc

Ian Luck has released Bass 0.7 which introduces new mo3 format,
which uses mp3 compression on tracked music. Let's see what he says
	to it:
"MO3s are treated and used in exactly the same way as normal MOD
musics. The advantage of MO3s is that they can be a lot smaller with
virtually identical quality. Playing a MO3 does not use any more CPU
power than playing the original MOD version does. The only difference
is a longer load time as the samples are being decoded."
	...
"Some sounds do not like MP3 compression, so MO3 also provides a
lossless compression that will on average reduce samples to around
50% of their size. The rest of the MOD structure is also compressed.
This all means that you can greatly reduce the size of MOD musics
without even using any MP3 compression."
Ian Luck also writes that MP3 compression supports 16bit samples
only (so 8-bit are converted to 16-bit first) and also "MP3 does not
maintain the sample shape exactly (some encoders more than others),
so a loop that normally sounds correct may produce a "click" or have
a gap in the MP3 version."
It's clear that this format is usable only for releasing, because
saving samples in mp3 format would take too much time and it would
destroy them pretty nice. But that's exactly what scene needs - a new
format that would keep high quality in combination with small size
	of files.
So if you want to see what it can do, get bass 0.7. Archive
contains dll, interface to include in your project, and of course a
program for creating mo3 files (for mp3 comression is used external
        command-line program of your choice - I've used mp3enc).
It's only first step, but very important - don't ignore it.
                                                                       tryhuk
