iMPURE is back at it again with pack ninety-three! Far from slowing down, our
members have been remarkably active lately. Hellbeard released his evocative
PC Linux demo, GLYPHNOSIS. We took the top four spots in this years Evoke
Amiga ANSI/ASCII compo. H7 was an absolute rockstar and took first place in
both that AND the PC ANSI/ASCII compo! To see more of his badassery, look no
farther than this release hes contributed a remarkable body of work to
elevate the pack. Jack Phlash and I have had fun collaborating as I launched
an Amiga Topaz version of his killer BBS door, Darkness 2.0. iMPURE is all
over the place and having a blast.
Ive been blessed to be a member of iMPURE for years now, and pack release day
never gets old for me. I always get inspired by the talent and skill of my
groupmates. Ive also come to feel gratitude to not only create something that
can be perceived as art, but to have a deeper awareness of art itself in
day-to-day life.
We take art for granted. Its all around us, and we often let it just roll off
of us instead of tasting it.
Before learning to draw textmode, I let art roll off of me. I just had a
general sense of whether something looked good or not. I had very little
understanding of what made me react a certain way. Was it because the image
represented something impactful to me on a personal level? Was it
photorealistic despite not being a photo? In this state, I rarely paused for
art in its myriad of forms. I was just speed-walking through lifes
experiences, not realizing that by doing so, I was missing so very much.
Learning to draw textmode isnt easy. At least, it wasnt for me. How is
anyone supposed to draw with these little characters and so few colors?
How can I draw an image that will evoke feeling or do justice as a logo? For
that, one has to first understand the particular nature of each character
used. It could be compared to making art with carved blocks dipped in ink.
There are no textmode art schools. There are no local textmode art clubs to
join. Art this niche is a journey of discovery and often excavation. Ive
found collies from the early 90s that have impressed me and imparted new
techniques. Aha! I can convey depth with contrast! Texture with shading as if
there is a light source! Letters in fonts are often defined by inner, not
exterior lines!
To anyone with an education in art, these are truly basic concepts. But, I
didnt go to art school. I had never read a book on composition. I learned
these concepts while tapping away at my keyboard to try to make my BBS look
cool. And there it was, slowly unfolding: the gift of art.
It was a bit like The Matrix. I couldnt turn the awareness of art off again.
Last night, I was watching a Japanese detective show from the late 90s called
Keizoku. The intro is a rapid-fire set of seemingly random images of
everything from blurry city skylines to Yin-Yang symbols to corpses while a
pleasant, dream-like J-pop song carries it all along. I stopped and took time
to drink it all in. I took time to experience it and think about how the
director was making me feel the way that I was feeling. Even though it was
just a television show intro, I took time for art and it was wonderful.
Earlier this week, I was briefly at the house of an older woman who is dying
of lung cancer. Shes moving soon as she doesnt have long to live and wont
be able to stay on her own. Its truly terrible. In her front yard, she had
hung up turquoise glass orbs from small trees. The large stones that made a
path to her front door were in the shape of stars. The windchime on her porch
was a smiling crescent moon. On the way out, I stopped and took it all in.
She had spent her last years turning her lawn into the sky. I took time for
art, and it was both sad and wonderful.
People have different reactions when I introduce them to textmode art. Some
find it to be interesting. Some find it to be utterly silly. But learning
it caused a profound change in the way that I experience the world. Every time
that I see what my groupmates have created for each new pack helps keep this
sense of wonder and appreciation alive.
iMPURE is a collective of very different guys from all over the world who
strive to create art from text. Were proud to present our 93rd pack.
Take time for it. We hope that you find it to be wonderful.
